MAN Truck & Bus creates operating manuals with DOCUFY software

Bamberg, Germany September 10, 2020 – MAN Truck & Bus (MAN) is one of the leading European commercial vehicle manufacturers and providers of transport solutions with annual turnover of approximately EUR 11 billion (2019). The product portfolio includes vans, trucks, buses, diesel and gas engines as well as services for passenger and freight transport. MAN is a TRATON SE company and delivered more than 104,000 vehicles in 2019. All of these vehicles require a 500 to 600-page instruction manual in up to 30 languages, plus repair manuals for workshops and maintenance documentation.

Through the implementation of COSIMA enterprise software and the DOCUFY Layouter from Bamberg-based DOCUFY GmbH, MAN’s instruction manuals can now be automatically imported into the correct layout, which even includes the calculation and creation of the cover page with spine to fit the thickness of the manuals. Stefan Gobitz-Pfeifer, Senior Manager for the Customer & Service Documentation (SASC) department at MAN Truck & Bus, says: “It’s a huge relief for my team that the Layouter has now been able to take over the time-consuming customization of the manuals. Thanks to the close cooperation with the DOCUFY team, we were even able to find the best possible solution for the big challenge of producing layout-compliant instruction manuals in right-to-left languages such as Hebrew.”

Mobile access to workshop literature with DOCUFY’s TopicPilot in planning

In addition, plans are underway to make workshop literature, such as repair and maintenance manuals for service technicians, available through the TopicPilot content delivery platform from DOCUFY in the future. This will allow for work processes such as the replacement of engines or lubricant renewal to be accessed as individual information packages via the After Sales Portal already in place at MAN. Gobitz-Pfeifer adds: “The information for the workshops will be coming centrally from COSIMA via TopicPilot, ensuring that the instructions for the service technicians are always up to date. Specific demands and potential safety risks brought about by outdated information will then be a thing of the past.”

Outlook: instruction manuals in vehicle display and integration of VR/AR

MAN is already planning to make instruction manuals available on the vehicle display and as a mobile app. This would further reduce operating costs, protect the environment through saving paper and increase ease of use. “We can also see the integration of videos or virtual and augmented reality applications via TopicPilot as being beneficial,” says Gobitz-Pfeifer.
