COSIMA is implemented on a multi-layer architecture based on J2EE standards. The strict adherence to these standards and the consistent use of the programming language JAVA enable the use of COSIMA on different Server Platforms.

The COSIMA-server is available for the following systems:
- Microsoft Windows (NT, 2000, XP),
- Sun Solaris,
- IBM AIX and
- Linux.
In order to use the COSIMA-Server, an application server conforming to the J2EE 2.0 standard is necessary (for example: IBM, WebSphere or JBoss).
All user data and administration data resides in a relational database. The following systems are supported:
- Microsoft SQL-Server,
- Oracle and
- IBM DB2
This multi-platform capacity and the use of modern application servers make the COSIMA-system scalable from a workgroup with 5 users to an enterprise system with several hundred users.
For specific expansion of COSIMA, efficient interfaces (APIs) are available. These interfaces enable expansion of functionality of the base system. Examples of this are automated tasks which are launched at each CheckIn, CheckOut or status transition. Additionally, it is possible to automate certain process steps using this API or to implement special user interfaces. An example of this is the packing of source documents and its delivery at the translation process.
